Welcome to a new London Mums interview, featuring Maggie, über-stylish writer of the children's blog, Chic Little Baby. Having written fashion for Vogue, The Observer, and in her current role at Time Out, it comes as no surprise that Maggie is at the forefront of the latest and loveliest trends for little ones. Some of my favourite posts from CLB include: affordable cashmere for kids, winter baby booties and, of course, the many exciting competitions too.
Bio: Maggie Westhead, Associate Shopping & Style editor of Time Out, 35, married to Tim, the Optometrist, 43, and mummy to Evie Isabel, 18 months. Maggie and family live in Highbury, north London with their Burmese cats, Stewy and Doris.
Tell us about Chic Little Baby. What inspired you to create it?
I had been thinking about my own online business for a while and I knew I wanted it to combine being a mum with my love of fashion. One day about six months ago when Evie had just turned one, I sat down and just started blogging. It's become a labour of love ever since. I am hoping it can now grow into a viable business.
What are your top three baby/child products or toys?
I'm a great fan of Green Baby. I like the ethics behind the label, the contemporary design and affordable prices. Most of Evie's clothes come from there. I also love Stokke - one of my best baby buys was the changing table. I have used it every day, several times a day since Evie was born (and it turns into a desk once she's older). I dream about owning an Olli Ella nursing chair. I love the sleek, modern design and the way they glide so comfortably. If only they existed when I first had Evie!
Where do you love to shop both online and in London?
There are so many places I love to shop in London, but here are my top five: Igloo Kids in Islington for shoes, toys and gifts; Hucklebones and Caramel for beautiful clothes; Sisters Guild a lovely new website and Something58, a charming gift shop in Lamb's Conduit Street.
It sounds like you have the perfect day job too! As the Associate Shopping & Style Editor at Time Out, can you tell us about your responsibilities?
I have been at Time Out for nearly seven years so I must love my job! I get to check out new shops, interview designers and compile shopping guides. Of course there are deadlines and stresses involved, but it is an inspiring and fast-paced job. Since having Evie, I work three days a week which is a good work/life balance.
Are there any perks to such a cool job?
I can't deny there are some perks! Apart from meeting interesting and quirky people, I get to try out new beauty products, find out about trends as they happen and spend a lot of time in shops.
Where are your family's favourite spots in London?
We love Highbury Fields and Clissold Park for walks and park time. We also enjoy Coram's Fields in Bloomsbury. Freightliners Farm and Gillespie Park, both in Islington, are also great hidden spots which Evie adores.
What do you like most about living in Islington?
The buzz, the people and the villagey feel. Islington is affluent, but not snobby and is really close to town. I love the architecture: we are just on the edge of Canonbury which is full of glorious Georgian houses and tree lined streets. Upper Street has some great shops and places to grab a coffee (Euphorium) or a bite (Ottolenghi), and a fab new restaurant called Trullo has recently opened up on our road. The babysitter is booked!
