I waited until after I had my baby before I read Call The Midwife (I didn't want the pregnancy/birth stories to freak me out pre-labour...). I started the book a couple days after giving birth and read it on my Kindle and iPhone during those mid-night feedings. Once I started, I couldn't put it down! It was so interesting to read the author's account of midwifery in London's East End.
The author, Jennifer Worth, describes several accounts of the women she assisted (some sad, some light — all interesting). I was surprised that during this period, nearly all women gave birth at home. People in general distrusted hospitals and only went in extreme cases. Also, husbands were never in the room when the baby was born. I can't imagine not having my partner with me during such an emotional time!
I haven't watched the TV programme Call the Midwife, but now I think I'll go download it...
Have you read Call the Midwife or watched the series? What did you think?
